Since 1775…

"The man who will go where his colors go without asking, who will fight a phantom foe in the jungle and mountain range without counting, and who will suffer and die in the midst of incredible hardship without complaint, is still what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to democratic America. He is the stuff of which legions are made. ... His pride is in his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thoroughly, and coldly realistic, to fit him for whatever he must face. ... And his obedience is to his orders. He has been called UNITED STATES MARINE."
~T.R. FERENHOCH, 'THIS KIND OF WAR'

Happy Birthday, Marines.

I'm glad to see that you read This Kind Of War even though it is primarily about the US Army and the politics of the war, not the USMC. He's a great writer and that's a great book.

The USMC is a great fighting force, and we are damned lucky that they are on our side.

One of the pipers in the band I am teaching always plays the Marine Corps Hymn for his tuning up piece. He looked over at me one day with this funny look on his face. After practice on Sunday night, he asked why I always stood up when he tunes. I explained that it was my duty to do so and told him the background. He thought it was very cool. Then he played it again later and Mum joined in. I guess that was a little extra for the 10th. Semper fi my friend, semper fi.

Wow. No words other than those lifted in grateful prayer.
