William Sadler is a fine actor. He is currently playing the role of Lt. Col. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller in the HBO Miniseries “The Pacific.” And he is doing it right – at least in my opinion.
A little about Chesty Puller. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1955 after fighting in three wars: the Banana Wars, World War II, and Korea. He is the most decorated Marine in United States history, including 5 awards of the Navy Cross – the second highest award awarded to Marines and sailors. It has been said that he was steadfastly loyal to his Marines and had no problems going up against his superiors when whatever was going on had to do with his men.
He also had a son – Lewis B. Puller, Jr. – who was highly decorated for actions as a Marine in Vietnam. The younger Puller died in 1994, 23 years after his father.
During World War II he commanded the Seventh Marine Regiment during the battles of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu.
He was a legend then. And he is a legend now.
I’ll write about the others shown in the series in another post. For now, music in the video below is the series’ main theme, entitled “Honor.” Composed by Hans Zimmer, it is an absolutely gorgeous piece of music. The person that produced it did a really nice job.
