The Parting Glass

I don't intend this to be morbid - not in the least - but if it were possible for this to be sung by someone at my funeral, I would want it to be done.

I discovered these guys today - they are "The High Kings", 4 incredibly talented Irish vocalists whose voices match impeccably. One of them, Finbarr Clancy, is the son of one of the original Clancy Brothers, and the other three are all of equal musical pedigree.

I'm now going to have to learn some lyrics so that I can sing this song at some point.

The Parting Glass

Of all the money that e'er I had,
I spent it in good company.
And all the harm I've ever done,
alas it was to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit
to mem'ry now I can't recall;
So fill to me the parting glass,
Good night and joy be to you all.

[So] fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Of all the comrades that e'er I had,
They're sorry for my going away.
And all my sweethearts that e'er I had,
They'd wish me one more day to stay.
But since it fell unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be to you all.

But since it fell unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be to you all.

That is a beautiful song. I have a good version of it off of the "Waking Ned Devine" soundtrack. It's a great movie too!

I know the version from "waking Ned Devine" - also very well done.

These guys just took me by surprise. I happened to be channel surfing when I hit WGBH in Boston. These guys were being pimped during the fundraiser.

Hopefully Martha and I can get tickets to see them in Boston in September.
