Falling Down

I don't know how else to title this post.

As of early this morning I managed to put myself out of work for the foreseeable future. While unloading a patient from my ambulance, I stepped out and missed the bumper, landing on the pavement with the full weight of my left leg. I landed on my back, and when I went to stand up, I discovered that couldn't put weight on my left leg.

We got the patient to the unit she was going to (she was going to Oncology and was on neutropenic precautions, and because of this I was wearing a mask which obscured my vision), and I immediately went the Emergency Room after this. After X-rays and a visit with both a resident and the attending physician, it was determined that I likely ruptured my Achilles tendon. So I went home, and my wife (God bless her - she's been awesome) made phone calls on my behalf to get me set up with the people I needed to deal with.

I saw the Orthopedic surgeon today, and basically he gave me two choices: either have it surgically repaired and be out of work for the next 4-6 months or don't do anything and give up my career. To me, it's no choice. I'm scheduled for surgery next Friday. And hopefully it will work as advertised.
